A Few Simple Methods For Training Your Pet Ferrets

Jul 22, 2010

If you are taking a ferret as a pet then the most important task would be to get it vaccinated. Ferrets can be trained effectively, but it is not so easy to train them, as compared to dogs and cats. The difficult part for training ferrets is to make him learn the household rules.

The best way to train a ferret for good behavior and obedience is to reward it with food. For rough behavior on its part, you can confine it to a cage and pay no notice to it. This will work wonders.

Ferrets are energetic creatures and love to move around a lot. As a result, the rooms can be messed up. Another common problem is nipping. But with a little bit of patience, ferrets can be trained not to nip and use the litter, instead of messing around.

The most useful trick that you can teach your ferret is coming, when called out. By teaching this trick, it will save a lot of anxious moments searching, or bringing him out from some small cramped space that he may creep into. Rewarding the ferret with some food articles whenever it comes when called out, is the best way to make him obedient.

Ferrets usually love chicken pieces or semi-moist liver flavored treats. A good idea when training ferrets would be to place some semi-moist treats in a tin box and shake it when you call the ferret. He will soon learn to come as soon as he hears his name and the rattling sound of the tin.

Baby ferrets are easiest to train and can be made to grow into happy and healthy adults through training and interactions at frequent intervals. Baby ferrets are also very playful and intelligent and can also learn tricks.

During the training, the most important thing would be to allow him to slow down after his initial boisterous play and habits. This is because until and unless he pays attention, he cannot learn much. The other important factor would be to take the ferret to the same area for his lessons, usually away from distractions.

If you have enough time and patience for training pet ferrets, you can train the ferret to bring things, sit up or roll over. This can be achieved if you repeat and reward him often. Once you are successful in the training process, the joyous moments of playing with it would be many.
